331st Annual Relief of Derry Commemoration
In the context of a Covid-19 pandemic this was an Anniversary like no other, and we won't be wishing another any time soon.
The 331st Commemoration of the Relief of Derry was held on 8 August 2020. Sadly the colour and spectacle of thousands of Apprentice Boys with banners and bands wasn't to be. A respectful honouring of the traditions of the Associated Clubs of the Apprentice Boys of Derry, within government guidelines of thirty participants, meant a rather different occasion than to what Members of the Apprentice Boys of Derry would be familiar.
This gallery records the events around the 2020 Commemoration.
Heralding the day's events, the firing of a cannon one and three times for the Brave 13, and symbolically touching the four gates closed to the armies of King James.
Then a pared down Relief of Derry Day, to meet Covid guidelines, with Officers of General Committee walking the circumference of the historic Walls with sixteen members, two from each of the eight Parent Clubs of the Associated Clubs of the Apprentice Boys of Derry, a number of musicians, and some blue coated marshals.
President, Bro. Gordon McMorris, and Treasurer, Bro. John Goligher, represented the Murray Club as the two representatives who joined with Officers of General Committee and other Parent Clubs though the morning's events.
Coming off the Walls there was a simple Act of Remembrance at the City's War Memorial in the Diamond, to remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice, in all conflicts, for peace and civil & religious liberty.
This was followed by a short Service of Thanksgiving in the precincts of St. Columb's Cathedral at the Siege Heroes Mound led by The Very Reverend Raymond Stewart, Dean of Derry, before a return to the Memorial Hall where 13 members, five officers of General Committee and one representative from each Parent Club closed the General Committee that had opened at the start of the day before Walking the Walls.
Vita Veritas Victoria.
